The Welsh Government has informed Size of Wales that it will end funding for the Mbale Trees Programme in Uganda from April 2027.
Over the past 15 years, this partnership between Wales and Uganda has planted millions of trees, supported livelihoods and helped communities become more resilient to the impacts of climate change.
Responding to the decision, Tim Birch, Chair of Size of Wales, said:
“We are deeply disappointed that the Welsh Government has informed us it will end funding for our vital tree seedling distribution programme in Uganda from April 2027.
“At a time of deepening climate crisis, we need to strengthen, not retreat from, our commitment to global responsibility.
“As we prepare for COP31, Wales must continue to show global leadership. Tackling the climate crisis is in all our interests, and working with international partners to protect our planet and build resilience to climate change is more important than ever.
“We urge the Welsh Government to reconsider this decision and continue supporting the long-term partnerships that are so vital to our shared future.”
Size of Wales remains committed to working with our partners in Wales and around the world to protect forests, support communities and tackle climate change.
