Indigenous Peoples are the world’s best guardians of the forests. They protect 80% of the world’s biodiversity, despite occupying only 20% of the planet.
Evidence shows Indigenous conservation skills and traditional knowledge are effective in protecting forests. According to the United Nations, deforestation rates are up to 50% lower in territories managed by Indigenous Peoples. Yet, Indigenous Peoples face eviction, violence, and attacks on their rights.
Supporting Indigenous Peoples is vital to protecting forests and tackling the climate crisis. We can do this through working in partnership, recognising Indigenous land rights, and providing direct funding to Indigenous communities.
