A new partnership between Welsh charity Size of Wales, and Cardiff-based independent coffee roasters Hard Lines brings a new coffee to the market that raises money for the Wampís Nation – an Indigenous Nation in Peru.
The Wampís are an Indigenous, autonomous nation who have called the Peruvian Amazon their home for over a thousand years. Their forests are vital to the global issue of climate change. However, it is becoming harder for the Wampís to protect their territory from deforestation driven by illegal mining, logging and oil extraction.
Anna Harris, Forest Projects Coordinator from Size of Wales said, “We’re so excited to work with Hard Lines who are strongly committed to sustainability. Through supporting the Wampís Nation, we can all help ensure a future with forests. Indigenous Peoples are the best guardians of our forests and they are vital to life on earth”.
Hard Lines are using coffee grown on the hillsides of Velo de Novia in Peru, which benefits from a diversity of micro-climates as a result of the region’s varying altitudes. The natural reserves surrounding these farms help protect the unique environment. It is a washed processed coffee with tasting notes of blackberry, hazelnut and milk chocolate.
Many of Hard Lines’ seasonal coffee releases are sourced via sustainable importers from coffee farms in Peru. They value sustainability, quality, cooperation, and most importantly, people and community, which means it can be part of the solution to driving better quality of life standards, for example by paying higher rates for coffee beans, contributing to the local economy and protecting livelihoods and improved standards of living.
Matt Jones, Co-Director of Hard Lines – It’s been amazing to see the hard work by the team to bring this project to life. This project will hopefully make a difference to the Wampís and cast light on their amazing work in the forest.
Sales from the coffee, ‘For the Forests’, will contribute to the Wampís’ campaign to protect their people and territory for future generations.
