Ysgol Teilo Sant, Carmarthenshire

Ysgol Teilo Sant started their Deforestation Free Champions journey by learning about different forest risk ingredients in the food they eat, including palm oil, coffee, cacao, soy and beef. They learned about the connections between these ingredients grown across the world, the foods they eat in Wales and tropical deforestation.

They went on to investigate their school menu, identifying forest risk ingredients. They also investigated new dishes designed by Cegin y Bobl. They needed more information for some of the questions so they decided to write a questionnaire to different people including the council, Cegin Y Bobl and Castell Howell. They also took part in the Welsh Government Healthy Foods Consultation, expressing their opinions about the food on their menu as well as sharing their new knowledge about deforestation.

Year 4 students attended an event organised by Carmarthenshire Young Farmers, where they had the opportunity to question a range of agricultural stallholders about deforestation.

Following this, they created both a video and a mural to share their learning with the school and wider community, aiming to raise awareness and inspire others. Their video shares the knowledge they learnt on their deforestation-free journey as well as the solutions everyone can take to help. They shared their learning at a whole-school assembly and invited parents to attend their special presentation too.
