St Joseph’s Primary School, Newport

After learning about the importance of tropical forests and the impact of deforestation linked to everyday agricultural products, Year 6 students at St Joseph’s set out on their deforestation free mission. 

After investigating their school meals, they invited their school catering company along for a business meeting, where they presented their findings on palm, soy, beef and cacao and heard about the company’s sustainability measures so far. The catering company learned a lot from the students, in particular about soy animal feed and palm oil, and promised to investigate the products themselves.

The students also created a survey to find out about the coffee buying habits of the adults in their school and delivered a presentation to the staff about the importance of choosing Fairtrade products.
