Nicola Pulman has a background in countryside management for conservation and working with local people. In 1998 she volunteered for Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) in Ghana, coordinating a conservation non-governmental organisation (NGO) dedicated to conserving endangered areas of community forest called Sacred Groves. In Nigeria, Nicola worked with forest communities to help sustain rainforests and primates and worked on sustainable livelihood and community development projects. In the UK, Nicola has worked in the charitable sector and for Cardiff University, where she managed an international partnership.
