This month we’re celebrating the recent partnership between Size of Wales and Run4Wales who organise high profile, elite and mass participation sporting events, including most recently the Cardiff Half Marathon.
Run4Wales approached Size of Wales because they wanted to address the environmental impact of their events and also engage their 27,000 Cardiff Half participants to do the same. Runners had the option to donate to Size of Wales when registering for the run to help mitigate the climate impact of the event, supporting Size of Wales and our fantastic tropical forest project partners. We were really pleased to see how many people opted to make a donation, a big thank you from Size of Wales to all those who did.
Run 4 Wales Chief Executive Matt Newman said: “The Cardiff University Cardiff Half Marathon has become the largest mass-participation event in Wales, and with this rapid growth has come environmental challenges. But our runners relished the opportunity to mitigate their carbon footprint through Size of Wales to help support and protect the globe’s tropical rainforests.
“It’s been fantastic to see the rise in environmental awareness of our runners. Our participants are helping us deliver on our new Green Action Plan, and together, we will create a sustainable future and challenge the status quo in the mass participation events industry.”
A big thank you must also go to the brilliant Size of Wales team of runners who did some amazing fundraising. Our runners included Size’s own Director, Elspeth who said “It was such a great day – the atmosphere was fantastic, although the last 5km were tough! We want to say an enormous thank you to Run4Wales – we were thrilled to be involved.”
Jean-Louis Button, a student and environmentalist at Swansea University also ran and fundraised for Size said “I chose to run for the Size of Wales in Cardiff as I believe that supporting organisations who are focusing on tackling climate change need to be supported and shouted about as much as possible! We are living in a crucial moment of time right now in which we must do our best to help mitigate the climate and ecological crisis which is unfolding before our very own eyes.”
During the event weekend, we had a stall in the event village where we were able to chat to lots of runners and supporters – thank you to so many people for coming over to say hello.
If you were one of the runners who took part, it’s not too late to donate to help mitigate the climate impact of the event – just text ‘Size £3’ to 70085 to donate £3.
