Size of Wales has reached the landmark 6 millionth tree planted in Uganda as part of their Ten Million Trees project. This summer, the climate change charity celebrated hitting their target of protecting an area of tropical forest twice the size of Wales and with this new milestone, they have now planted trees equal to twice the population size of Wales!
Ten Million Trees, funded by Size of Wales and the Welsh Government will plant ten million trees in the heavily deforested region of Mbale in eastern Uganda. As well as fighting climate change – one of the biggest issues of our time – fast growing trees alleviate the pressures on the impoverished community of Mbale caused by deforestation.
Rita Singh, Size of Wales’ Director said “We’re very proud of our two recent landmarks – through our sustainable forest management work we’ve protected twice the area size of Wales. And now through our tree planting project, we’ve planted twice the population size of Wales! Deforestation is one of the greatest contributors to climate change and so by protecting and replanting tropical forests, we are helping to mitigate the effects of climate change.”
Francis Alinyo, the project’s Coordinator in Mbale said: “This project has been a blessing to the region and the most vulnerable of communities. The trees reduce soil erosion lessening the risk of deadly landslides. They can also provide food, fuel, shelter and improved incomes. By raising awareness locally about the causes and effects of climate change, the project is gaining support and momentum all the time.”
Ten Million Trees is also a beneficiary of the Welsh Government’s Plant! Scheme. Plant! – the Welsh word for children – plants two trees for every child born or adopted in Wales. One tree is planted in new woodland here in Wales and the other in Mbale.

Notes to Editors
- Size of Wales is a unique charity helping to sustain an area of rainforest twice the size of Wales as part of our national response to climate change. Together, individuals; companies; local councils; schools and community groups across Wales are fundraising to protect and sustain over four million hectares of rainforest and forge lasting links with forest communities in some of the world’s poorest countries whilst raising awareness of climate change.
